My fascination with community mental health stems from a combination of personal experiences, a genuine interest in understanding human behavior, and a passion for engaging in social work. This interest became more pronounced during my two-year study of psychology, which included a significant six-month internship.
During one internship at a private facility, I encountered individuals from affluent backgrounds who had the means to afford therapy. Another internship took me to a huge mental health hospital in Karelibaug. Here, a dedicated team of psychiatrists and psychologists worked on complex cases, overseeing more than 250 in-house patients. Each patient received treatment tailored to the severity of their mental health conditions.
In the psychology department, I participated in assisting psychologists with cases involving young individuals and those diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). I conducted various tests, including IQ and projective testing. The exposure to people seeking help from diverse locations underscored the urgency of addressing mental health challenges.
One striking observation was that many patients had attempted alternative approaches before seeking help, and unfortunately, for some, it was already too late. The issue extended beyond mere reluctance to visit mental health facilities; there was a pervasive lack of awareness and understanding about mental health. Some individuals even resorted to superstitious practices before seeking professional help.
Recognizing this gap in awareness, I strongly believe in the crucial role of community psychologists. Early intervention is imperative to prevent the escalation of mental health issues. It is essential to convey to people the significance of mental health just like with physical health. Inspired by this mission, I aspire to become a community psychologist, reaching out to communities, sharing knowledge, and raising awareness about mental health before it reaches a critical stage.
